If you can’t beat them, join them.

Well, it happened, I finally turned 25. I genuinely thought it would never happen to me, a little naive, I know. I figured I’d just stay 21 forever, maybe 22 on a bad day. Turns out time waits for no man, not even me.

Anyway, it was a combination of reaching this milestone in life, and just generally getting fed up with the stress of running a business, that led me to a life changing decision (I’ve always wanted to have one of those).

I got a job!

That’s right, I’ve shut down the web design part of my company, and gone to work for someone else. The web hosting part of ClearVector is still very much alive though.

I can’t believe how quickly it happened. I was expecting to send a few CV’s out, kick back for a couple of months playing guitar and eating Tesco Value food, before eventually being offered a job that wasn’t ideal, but would have to do. After all, we are in a depression/recession/oppression, and jobs are harder to find than ever.

Oh how wrong I was. The very day I applied to the first few jobs my phone started ringing off the hook, and I still had another 30 or so to apply to. In less than 2 weeks I’d been offered a job with a company I really wanted to work for.

Now I’m not saying that I’m an amazing website developer, and that companies were all fighting for me. It could just be that I got lucky and happened to start applying at a time when there were a lot of web development jobs and not many web developers. Who knows? But either way, I’m certainly not one to toot my own horn…

You may be wondering why am I writing this here, well there are two reasons. Firstly, as an update for any of my friends to whom I haven’t spoken in a while. But also for myself, partly just as a snapshot of my life right now, and partly because I’ve set my self a new goal, and if I write it down, I’m more likely to achieve it. Or at least less likely to deny it ever existed.

My new goal is to put all of my spare time, effort and money into my music for the next 5 years. And if by the time I’m 30 I’m not making a living from music, I’ll start a new web design business, having learned from the mistakes I made the first time round. If I’m honest, I find either of those outcomes exiting, but obviously the rock star option is preferred.

So there it is, in writing, my new mission, my new goal. It’s Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Results Oriented, and has a Time frame. That’s right, it’s smart, which according to self-help gurus and one of my secondary school teachers, that’s somthing all goals must be.

See you on the other side. (toot toot)
